Green vs. Green

Saving the planet is important, but so is saving money. Occasionally these two concepts are at odds with each other.  In this economy, sometimes Mother Nature ends up taking a back seat to necessity. Fortunately, "necessity is the Mother of Invention". With that in mind, we begin the first of what will be an occasional look at how these two 'mothers' are doing in relation to the delicate balancing act that is our overall survival.

Recently General Motors announced their new Chevy Volt. This long anticipated electric/hybrid vehicle is the automobile company's best hope to get a new footing in the marketplace and stabilize their financial future. It is touted to get an almost unbelievable 230 mpg. in the city. However, and it's a BIG however, the price tag when it is released late next year is purported to be in the range of $40,000! chevyvolt230mpg.jpgThat's a whole lot of green ($) to spend to help make the planet a little more green. In other terms, the difference in price with a less costly but similar sized vehicle comes to about the same amount of money you'd spend on 5,000 gallons of gas. If you use 18-20 gallons a week, it will take you about 5 years to recoup your money. That's a long time in car years and money in this economy.

We like the idea of the Volt and we hope GM gets a better handle on the price, but what people are saying now is "Green is good, but will it save me money!" led_bulb.png It's understandable, timely and important. So with that in mind we offer this piece from Contributing Editor Howard Lubert with an ROI (Return On Investment) perspective of LED lighting . A bright idea for saving money.
